Starting a blog with your domain name is the best option in all respects. It is not only my belief, but it is also the first advice of almost all pro bloggers.
Only a blog can give you the freedom to live life on your own terms and make you financially strong, even without doing a 9 to 5 tedious job.
To know about starting a blog, check my comprehensive guide on “How to Start a Blog in 2019” and follow the steps to create your own blog in just 20 minutes.
Well, besides creating a blog, you can do a lot with your domain name. Yes, it’s true.
So without delay, let’s see what things you can do after buying a domain name.
Build a Website or Blog Using Your Domain Name
Having a website binds your business together. It is the link that binds you to the customer.
A website can be a portal for you to plug in your social media handle, let people know about your business plan and function, post about upcoming events, upload photos and posters from a contest you just organized, or just write blog posts in your favorite niche.
Generally, people buy a domain name intending to create a website.
So how can you build a blog/website? Follow the steps given below-
I bought a domain now what? How can I build a website?
Follow these steps-
1) Get a Web Hosting for your domain-
After purchasing a domain name, the first thing you need to do is buy web hosting from a well-known and reliable hosting company.
Note: Even if you do not want to create a blog or want to go with any other option, you will still need a web hosting, Because, without a web hosting account, you can’t do anything with your domain name.
But wait, it doesn’t mean that you buy a hosting account for your domain from any company available on the web. Most of the companies don’t provide the right support to you in the future, as well as not providing all the features that your blog needs.
If you are entirely new in this area and do not know which web hosting company is the best, then I would recommend you to go with the most popular and reliable company, which is currently powering over 2 million websites worldwide, Yes I’m talking about Bluehost.
Here, the Bluehost is not only my first recommendation but also almost all pro-bloggers recommend it. Even WordPress itself too. (You can see the recommendation of WordPress here)
Here’s how you can buy hosting from Bluehost-
a) Click on this unique link to buy hosting from Bluehost. (It is a huge discount link)
Once You click on the Bluehost link, you will reach this screen.
Next, click on the green button stating “Get Started Now” and move onto the next step.
b) Choose your plan-
You will be redirected to a page where you can choose a plan according to your budget.
There are three kinds of plans: “Basic,” “Plus,” “Pro,” and “Choice Plus.” The basic plan is suitable for low budget websites, which might not have as much traffic. However, if you aspire more traffic on your website and want it to be more pleasing, it is advisable that you should go for the “choice plus plan” with unlimited services.
You can alter your plan choice later too.
c) Enter Domain Name-
Assuming that you already have a domain name because the question was “I bought a domain, now what?” It is now time to make it official.
If you don’t have a domain, you can make one in the left column.
Just enter your domain name in the “I have a domain name” column and press “next”.
d) Fill in your account details-
On the “create your account page”, it is time to add in your personal information.
It is now time to pay and register your Bluehost account.
2) Set Up the Website-
The first step in order to set up your website is to install WordPress to your domain.
However, if you receive your domain name while purchasing a hosting account, then Bluehost automatically installs WordPress on your domain without clicking a single link or button.
But here’s something else, you have bought your domain name somewhere else, Now you have to do it manually.
Assuming that you have bought your domain name from Godaddy. Now follow the procedure-
- Log in to your Godaddy account.
- Navigate to “My Products” then click on “Domains“.
- Find the domain name that you want to use to create a blog, Click on It.
- Go to the end of the page and click on “Manage DNS“.
- Go to the Nameservers section and click on the green button stating “Change”.
- Now Choose your new nameserver type “Custom“.
- Now add the following line only once in each box-
- Save it. Your domain is now pointing to the Bluehost successfully.
Now Install WordPress Manually-
There are two ways to perform this step. It is our duty to instruct you with the easier method. We will use the one-click method Bluehost.
The following are the steps to install WordPress on your blog.
- Log in to your Bluehost Account.
- Open the control panel.
- Under the website panel, look for the WordPress icon.
- Choose the domain where you want to install WordPress.
- Click Install Now. That’s it.
3) Design Your New Website-
After installing WordPress to your domain, a basic site will appear on your screen.
In order to personalize your WordPress site, you will need a template. This template will provide character to your website. A template is an instruction for WordPress to replicate it for you, And in WordPress, it is known as a theme.
You can access free themes on your dashboard. Just search in the sidebar for the “Appearance” key, then click “Themes”. You can filter the themes according to your liking or even search the same with a keyword.
If you want to make your website look like a professional, then I’ll never recommend using free themes. I would like you to use a good premium theme because, with a premium theme, you get a lot of things like good speed, good security, and excellent support also, which matters a lot for a new blogger.
Here are some of my favorite Themes that you can use on your blog-
- Genesis (StudioPress Themes) – StudioPress is the most popular WordPress theme company, And its themes come with a framework named Genesis. This framework comes with several customization options, and which is also fully SEO-friendly. Most of the pro-bloggers also recommend using this theme.
- GeneratePress– This is also a great theme with less than 30 kb zipped file (very lightweight). I used this theme in many of my blogs, including this too, and I have seen its results. It is a fantastic theme.
- Divi (Elegant Theme)– If you want to make a beautiful looking website but don’t know a single line of coding, then this theme is only for you. Here only in one purchase, you will also get the EXTRA theme and the world-famous two premium plugins (Monarch and Bloom) with DIVI. Give it a try.
4) Add Content to Your New Website-
Now that we have decided how we want our website to look, it is time to add some content to it.
Here are some functions you can perform on the website:
- Add and edit pages – To add Pages, you have to look in the WordPress dashboards for “pages” in the sidebar. After clicking pages, click “Add New”. Here you can type content, add images, and save the content once edited.
- Add Blog Posts – Similar to the pages, you have to go to the “posts” in the sidebar and click it. After clicking it, click “add new”. Now you can write your article here.
This was a short guide to creating a blog, but if you think you need a complete guide for it, then you can follow my detailed (almost 10000+ words) step-by-step guide on how to start a blog.
Option – 2
Create Your Custom/Professional Email Address
I know that you might be thinking, If “I have a domain name, then how can I create a professional email address?”
If yes, then don’t wonder, I am here to help you.
You can use your domain to make a professional customized email address. Using the standard Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail email ID may sound old school and also may not promote your business as much.
Imagine having a common name like Sam. Now, creating an email address would be tough because there would be a lot of people by that name. So you will have to add a random number that you are going to remember in front of Sam. So now you end up with a complicated email ID like ‘sam2983490XX@gmail.com‘.
This is often inconvenient for both the user and the owner.
Now imagine having a domain name, e.g., HelpfulArticles.com, so Sam can now create a unique ID; sam@HelpfulArticles.com. This will promote the business, be unique, and will be easy for Sam to remember.
Having a custom email can be beneficial in many ways. Like-
Marketing: When you create a personal email ID for your business, it is advisable to share it among employees. So when your employees share their email ID’s with others, people will also know the name of your domain, and this will promote your business.
Unique: A custom email address made from your domain name makes your address unique. There is less chance that people will face a problem in creating a new email ID. There may be many Sam in the world but less in your company with the same domain name.
Goodwill: Having a custom email will make your customers and employees have more faith in you. They will consider your work to be serious and genuine.
Let’s take an example. You receive the same email stating you are hired for a job at HelpfulArticles from two different email IDs, one from ‘sam23982XX@gmail.com’ and one from ‘sam@HelpfulArticles.com’. Who would you trust more?
It is natural to say that the one where the company domain matches the email seems more genuine.
Professionalism: Having a domain name will give a professional flair to your work. People will consider you to be more professional and will also take their job seriously. Having a personalized email ID will also make the employees feel important and help them become a part of the firm better.
Create an Online Store with Your Domain
You can have a customized e-commerce website of your own. This e-commerce website is different from the standard website, as stated above, as it will be like your online store.
You will be transacting with customers through it. You can buy and sell products here.
Moreover, managing inventory, tracking orders, collecting payments, and collecting feedbacks will now be online.
Here are some features that your website must include to make it practical, useful, and trendy:
1) Easy to Use:
The ease of using the online store should be a two-way streak. It should be easy for both- you and the customer. The customer should be able to navigate functions and products on your website easily. The payment process for the purchased goods should follow the three Ss: Sensible, Secure, and Simple.
The website should be organized and easily accessible for you to use as well.
2) Built-in Payment Process:
Make sure that your website has an integrated payment process. It sounds obvious to have a payment gateway, but some website builders don’t offer the same.
Having a built-in payment process will cut down the time of being transferred to another website where e-commerce companies lose most of their audience. If this process is made simple, your online shop will benefit directly from it.
3) Inventory Management:
It is often hard to keep track of the physical stock and online orders. It is common to receive online orders and find that you no longer have stock to fulfill it. There is a feature on websites where you can keep track of the inventory and sync it with your website. Here, you enter the amount of stock you have available. As you keep selling more and more units, you get an alert when the stock is low, and the product is removed from the site automatically when you run out of physical inventory.
4) Shop Style:
Products are the second element that meets the eye of the customer. The customer is greeted with the style of your store first. Like it is in malls, you choose to go to a store that plays good music and has a beautiful ambiance, the clothes themselves feel nice. Customers search for the same thing online.
A beautifully styled website will please the customer and will make them stay longer and have patience towards your website.
5) Client Relationship Management :
It is vital to have a CRM or Client Relationship Management, through which the customers can interact with you and build a personal profile. This particular profile will enable the customer to stock carts and save details. While creating this account, the customer is supposed to share their email ID with you, which can be used later to notify the customer about business happening like sales, discounts, and other marketing events.
6) SSL Security:
Safety should be the number one priority in a business. SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is one such cure to gain your customer’s trust. As the customer shared their private information like credit card numbers on the website, it is vital to make sure that the site is secure. This is where SSL comes into play and keeps customer information intact.
Creating an online store is as easy as creating a blog. You can create it too easily in just a few minutes.
Sell the Domain
If you do not want to create a blog or to do anything with this domain now and are thinking that I have bought a domain name now what?
Then you can also think about selling it.
Some people find it challenging to come up with a unique domain name of their own. So, they can go and buy a pre-made domain and save their time and energy.
It may also be possible that you thought of a better name that should be your domain, but you already have one registered. In such cases, selling the domain comes into play.
You can contact interested buyers on domain aftermarket sites. These sites take a small portion of your sale in the form of a commission. You can instantly sell your domain, or you can put it on auction as well.
Find below some tips to easily buy and sell your domain:
1) Narrow Your Focus:
It is always good to target a type of industry while buying a domain in order to resell it. For example, If you have a more excellent knowledge of baking, it is advisable to buy a domain related to cake and pastries. It is possible that you will have a sense of price setting for that product as you know baking ingredients are generally costly. You may not even be familiar with the industry, specialized organizations, and the buyers may not take your services seriously.
It is essential to understand the audience and the flow in the market.
2) Find Real Value Name:
It is crucial that you find names that offer real value. Thinking of titles that you would want as a buyer is an excellent place to start. Now that we have established that you would enter a genre you are familiar with, you will soon begin to analyze the need for a name in the market keeping your competitor’s domain in mind. Questions like- how competitive is the market, amount of turnover and rate of return are good to look into.
For example; you are looking to create and sell a domain for a baking shop, and you know the wedding season is around. From this, we can establish that the sales will flourish. Now we will look at how other cake sellers have named their domain. Is it as simple as sellcakes.com or something fancy like ‘velevetfrosting.com’? Now we have to see how many customers can recognize the domain and go back to it actually to purchase something.
These two steps have enabled you to price your domain well and know your market. Now after such hard work, people should bid higher for your product.
Create a Vanity URL with Your Domain Name
Sometimes, it is advisable to put an idle or unused domain to work by making it a branded custom link shortener. A link shortener is a smaller version of your domain name that is used to shorten any link to make it easier to remember.
Suppose I have a website with URL https://www.testblog.com/, this is a fantastic URL, but we can make it even sweeter, shorter, and easy on tongue by getting a vanity URL saying ‘https://test.blog’.
Mainly these types of URLs are used to track the total clicks received on any particular link.
